Garden Rock. Album Leaf, ink and light colors on silk. Inscription and Signature by the artist: „Painted in the style of Mei Shami (Wu Zhen, 1280-1354), Lan Ying“. One seal of the artist: “Tianshu”. Three collectors’ seals: “Ziqing xin shang”, “… xin shang” etc .

Lan Ying, style name Tianshu, was a professional artist active in Hangzhou. He was one of the last painters of the Zhe school and could work in the brush style not only of the literati painters but also of Song masters like Li Tang (ca. 1070-1150). The brush technique of the latter, the famous axe cut strokes, may be seen in this small painting of a rock. There are eight artists with the style name ‘Ziqing’, one of them is Lu Yuqiao, living in Yixing during the Daoguang period (1821-1850). He was a connoisseur of art
